Content warning: discussion of sexual abuse and assault (as presented in the film).
This nunsploitation flick is torn between two directions: a film about sexual awakening in repressed contexts (filmed in a sensual manner) and an all out exploitation film rife with sexual violence. As odd as it is to say, the film could have worked as either film - though I would prefer the first.
If the film committed to taboo busting extremity from the start, in a self aware way - and wasn't so target on victimising women and female sexuality - it would really work. The Japanese New Wave inspired sensibility gives a sense of deniable surrealism that takes away the stakes. This feels like a dream,…

Part 1 in my mission (from God) to watch every nunsploitation flick in existence.
...Suspornia.

Don’t be surprised if you see me logging a lot of nunsploitation in the near future :p
As others have said, this has a huge giallo feel to it in the vein ofSuspiria but with a coastal setting. Lots of dim hallway shots with neon green lighting, but also nighmarish masturbation/sex scenes with knives and blood spray, a rosary bead chastity belt vibrator torture device, women being used as candle holders and lots of unknown gooey substances (plaster? oatmeal? honey? idk)
I like rope so I liked this! -

Day #24 of Japanuary!
Continuing with the theme of watching Japanese films throughout January, I decided to watch a nunsploitation(!!!) film.
I didn't know I wanted to become a nun until now. Anyone got some rope?

Nunsploitation Nikkatsu Roman Porno with a touch of Giallo. It’s an intriguing mix. And while Nunsploitation isn’t usually my thing, this kinky little fucker just might be my new favorite of the sub-genre. Very sensual, pretty depraved and stylishly shot, it should be a tasty little nightcap for every pervy S&M/Bondage fan out there. I know, I’ll sleep well tonight.

If you have seen any of Nikkatsu's Oniroku Dan adaptations, you pretty much know what to expect here, except for the surprising addition of some rather effectively incorporated Argento-esque stylization. Beautiful visuals aren't necessarily the first thing I associate with 80s roman pornos, but I love how this looks. Might even compare to the 70s highlights of Konuma and Kumashiro in that department.

Not quite enough rope or hell for my taste, but there was a very enjoyable amount of nun.

Another example where the book was better than the film. The line between exploitation cinema and porn is getting blurrier and blurrier, and I blame Ben. Banger of a mid-80s funk soundtrack though.

Suspiria but make it Japanese nun porn. Put this on Criterion Channel cowards

Review by Dakota Noot ★★★★
"Are You There God? It's Me...Miki Takakura." For the 3rd official "SM Queen," Nikkatsu burns "Suspiria" (for real this time!) into nunsploitation. Whereas Argento destroyed the minds of dancers, this film seeks to possess bodies. Takakura is tied in ropes both literal (BDSM) and figurative (the church or her past). I feel defensive of this film - when the top review is a bland critique against pink film, offers no context, and compares this to Japanese New Wave (an influence seen more in '60s pinku or early '70s Roman Porno). "Nun in Rope Hell" is a bigger-budget BDSM film - not quite the trash-pulp exploitation of Shōgorō Nishimura (who defined Junko Mabuki's BDSM career) or the dark-awakenings of Masaru Konuma…

so many beautiful images in this thing, but its like when i do three laps thru the museum to feel like i got my moneys worth--which is wild because its barely an hour long. but it ends with an explosion so alls well. gonna start saying this is my suspiria.
