Down to a few spots (1:40 p.m.): The Broncos will create a spot on the roster by starting the season with CB Damarri Mathis (right ankle) on injured reserve, sources told The Post. Teams can add two to IR and designate them to return on cutdown day, a new rule tweak this year from the NFL. That would put Mathis out the first four weeks.

The Broncos as of 1:40 p.m. are down to 56 and have just three moves to go.

Flurry of OL moves (12:45 p.m.): Broncos have released Sam Mustipher and waived seventh-round pick Nick Gargiulo, tackle Demontrey Jacobs and guard Will Sherman. Not long after, Calvin Throckmorton joined the group of jettisoned linemen, too.

Broncos move on from Griffith (12:07 p.m.):Denver has waived inside linebacker Jonas Griffith, a source told The Post. Griffith, who returned from back-to-back season-ending injuries, was in a tight battle for the starting inside linebacker job with Cody Barton. With Griffith no longer in the picture, the door opens for undrafted rookie Levelle Bailey to potentially make the roster.

Broncos starting with four OLBs on roster (11:35 a.m.): With Nchami not expected on the active roster to start the season and Thomas Incoom waived, Denver will keep just four outside linebackers on the initial 53-man roster. Those are Jonathon Cooper, Baron Browning, Nik Bonitto and rookie Jonah Elliss.

Nchami won’t make 53-man roster (11:27 a.m.): Edge rusher Durell Nchami is expected to be waived with an injury settlement or be put on the injured reserve list after suffering a hamstring injury during Sunday’s win over the Cardinals.

Johnson becomes victim to crowded wide receiver room (10:47 a.m.): The Broncos waived wide receiver Brandon Johnson after recording four touchdown receptions in 2023. Following Denver’s preseason win over the Cardinals on Sunday, head coach Sean Payton said the team will have tough decisions to make regarding the wide receiver room. Johnson recorded two catches for 83 yards and a touchdown against Arizona. However, it wasn’t enough to secure a roster spot.

Badie’s strong camp not enough (10 a.m.): The Broncos waived RB Tyler Badie despite a strong training camp and preseason. It’s not a surprise given the depth at the position, but even still Badie only helped his chances over the past month.

“I would say he’s had a really good camp. No. 1, he’s exceptionally smart,” Payton said last week. “He can give you some juice in the passing game. He’s got some joker traits. … He’s had a really productive camp. He’s been impressive.”

It’s unclear if Badie is in the mix for a practice squad spot. Denver could also look to rookie RB Blake Watson as a PS candidate.

Virgil waived (9:45 a.m.): The Broncos started their Tuesday moves by waiving WR Jalen Virgil. He is a practice squad candidate if he clears waivers, though he’s generated interest from other teams, a source said.

Setting the Tuesday stage (7:10 a.m.): The Broncos enter Tuesday morning with, functionally speaking, about 24 more moves to make to get down to 53 by 2 p.m.

On Monday, Denver made eight moves official and informed WR Tim Patrick, RB Samaje Perine and P Trenton Gill that they are moving on from each. Then LB Drew Sanders (Achilles) and S Delarrin Turner-Yell (knee) will start the season on PUP, at which point they will not count against the roster. They’ll each miss at least the first four games, though mid-season is a more reasonable projection for each anyway.

So, will either Patrick or Perine end up traded? Are there more veteran cuts or another trade to come — a quarterback, perhaps?

And who else surprises by making the initial 53-man roster? It’s a busy day ahead.

Monday updates

Broncos working on multiple trades (2:55 p.m.): The Broncos have informed veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick and running back Samaje Perine that each will be traded or released ahead of the Tuesday deadline, sources confirmed to The Post.

Patrick came on strong over the course of training camp after missing the past two years of injury and was not in uniform for Sunday’s win against Arizona.

Perine didn’t play in Sunday’s preseason finale, either. The team clearly wanted to ensure the running back’s health to facilitate a potential move.

Perine was an effective third-down and two-minute back for Denver last year, but the Broncos have several other options this summer in Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and rookie Audric Estime at the front of the room.
